Family Medicine Residency Program Director
About the Role
Are you a Family Medicine physician ready to build something from the ground up? Thundermist Health Center is launching a new ACGME-accredited Family Medicine residency program, and we’re looking for a founding Program Director to lead every aspect of it — from accreditation and curriculum design to faculty recruitment and resident selection, with matriculation targeted for June 2027. You’ll split your time between program leadership, precepting residents, and caring for patients at our Woonsocket site, reporting directly to the Chief Medical Officer. This is a chance to shape the next generation of family physicians while advancing health equity in the communities we serve.
What You’ll Do
Program Development & Educational Leadership
- Lead all aspects of developing and launching Thundermist’s new ACGME-accredited Family Medicine residency program.
- Design competency-based clinical and didactic curricula aligned with ACGME requirements and Thundermist’s commitment to patient-centered, community-oriented care.
- Complete the accreditation application, lead site visits, and maintain ongoing ACGME compliance as the program matures.
- Collaborate with clinical partners to establish and maintain resident rotation sites across specialties.
- Design assessment tools, conduct routine resident evaluations, and continuously improve curricula based on outcomes and feedback.
Resident Recruitment, Faculty & Clinical Practice
- Oversee all aspects of resident recruitment and selection, including ERAS application review and the NRMP Match process, with a focus on building a diverse cohort.
- Recruit, supervise, and mentor program faculty, fostering a culture of teaching excellence and ongoing professional development.
- Directly supervise four faculty positions (two physicians, one behavioral health faculty, and one additional faculty member) with dual reporting responsibilities.
- Maintain an active clinical practice at the Woonsocket site, dedicating eight hours per week to direct patient care using eClinicalWorks.
- Precept residents in clinical settings for eight hours per week (two 4-hour blocks), serving as a role model for community-engaged family medicine.
What We’re Looking For
You’re a physician educator who leads with vision, empathy, and a deep commitment to training the next generation of family doctors. You bring the clinical credibility and academic expertise to build a program from scratch — and the collaborative spirit to do it within a mission-driven community health center.
- MD or DO with board certification in Family Medicine (ABFM) — no other specialties will be considered.
- Active Rhode Island medical licensure (or eligibility) and minimum 3–5 years of post-residency clinical experience, including FQHC settings.
- Minimum 3 years of medical education experience (preferably GME) with documented experience training medical students or residents.
- CORE faculty training completed, or willingness to complete upon assuming the role.
- Outstanding communication skills, exceptional attention to detail, and proven ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships.
- A demonstrated commitment to health equity, community medicine, and building inclusive training programs.
Schedule & Locations
This is a full-time, on-site position (40 hours/week) based at our Woonsocket, Rhode Island location. Your time breaks down to approximately 20 hours on program director duties, 8 hours precepting residents, 8 hours in direct patient care, and 4 hours on administrative work. You’ll also participate in the departmental call and coverage rotation. Regular in-state and out-of-state travel is required.
