Position Overview

The Lead Application Administrator will serve as lead administrator for administrative applications and their databases, installing, updating, tuning and diagnosing application/database issues within a complex higher education environment. Manage/configure integrations among applications/databases (including secure messaging and data transfer) as well as user roles, permissions and groups within the applications. Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of the applications and their databases. Assist users with adjustments to business practices to make effective use of the software, providing training resources and guidance for the applications as needed.

Assume leadership role and project lead responsibilities in database and application administration. Work with management, leadership and clients to lead application evolution efforts: help inform selection of new products, gain buy-in from affected clients, manage RFP and other selection processes, design and execute communication plans and manage projects related to application maintenance and deployment.

Essential Duties
  • Assume project lead responsibilities for database and application administration projects or other management duties as directed.
  • Serve as the project manager for application transition activities, planning, tracking and when needed executing technical implementation, quality assurance and communication tasks for the project.
  • Install, maintain, and upgrade application product software and databases. Update applications and databases by applying fixes and patches on a regular basis. Monitor and fine-tune databases on a regular schedule.
  • Maintain database standards, security, and data integrity.
  • Manage all application and database environments (e.g., database instances of production, test, quality assurance, demo, and development). Develop test plans to verify logic of new or modified applications.
  • Monitor software applications & databases. Document, analyze & work closely with other staff members and vendors to tune and troubleshoot problems.
  • Collaborate with internal and external IT resources to ensure proper data integration of applications.
  • Perform backup and restore procedures for all databases and regularly monitor and tune databases for optimal performance.
  • Plan, coordinate, test and communicate changes, upgrades/maintenance schedules, and new services with management, IT leadership and clients, ensuring business continuity in current and future environments.
  • Work closely with Information Security to ensure appropriate controls and audit logs are in place. Configure access control and integration with current authentication methods.
  • Participate in the evaluation of database support products designed to maintain the databases and applications using the databases.
  • Coordinate database, application and server/storage maintenance with other information technology and end-user units of the College.
  • Review programs and documentation developed by project team to ensure compliance with specifications and standards
  • Maintain proficiency in programming, systems analysis and project control tools and techniques used to develop administrative systems.
  • Maintain proficiency in the support, installation, maintenance, and system performance of college databases.
  • Assume a leadership role in technical innovation, improvement and assessment, and the professional development of staff.
  • Take a lead role in long range planning for the department; write plans and proposals for the department.
  • Work with the campus community, vendors, and ITS professionals to achieve college objectives; represent the department and the college at inter-institutional meetings.
  • Responsible for continuous skill development through a combination of online and in person training opportunities.
  • Focus on client service and ensuring the success of others in their work with IT systems and tools, applying best practices of IT Service management and delivery.
  • Work collaboratively and constructively with other IT professionals within the University to advance departmental, area, divisional and college goals.
  • Respond to technical emergencies outside of normal working hours as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records & documentation of system updates, modifications and new deployments.

 

Occasional Duties Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director, Management Information Services.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of six years of experience/in system/application/database administration.

 

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience with the installation and maintenance of PeopleSoft (or other) ERP systems including the products used in its support (Weblogic, Tuxedo, SQR, Crystal Report, Application Engine, PS Query).
  • Experience in administrative Windows servers and/or Microsoft SQL servers.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams with substantial client participation.
  • A track record of direct supervision of students or other staff demonstrating a commitment to their development as IT professionals.
  • A track record of positive client feedback.
  • Demonstrated track record of collaboration and cooperation with individuals working in different departments within a Higher Education context.

 

Environmental Conditions This position requires occasional lifting, moving, and or installation of moderately heavy equipment (such as computers), wiring, and other related information technology components
