Substance use disorders affect people across all industries and job types, making workplaces an important part of the solution. A significant portion of adults living with a substance use disorder are currently employed, which means many individuals experiencing challenges are showing up to work every day while navigating unmet treatment needs.

For many employees, the workplace is one of the few consistent points of contact where support, information, and early intervention can occur. However, stigma, fear of job loss, and lack of awareness often prevent people from seeking help. When treatment is viewed as a personal issue rather than a health issue, employees may delay care until a crisis occurs.

Workplaces that prioritize supportive policies can help change this. Access to benefits that cover substance use treatment, clear and compassionate leave policies, and strong employee assistance programs can make a meaningful difference. Training supervisors to recognize early warning signs and respond appropriately also helps create an environment where employees feel safe asking for help.

Supporting treatment and recovery is not only beneficial for employees, it also strengthens organizations. Employees who receive appropriate care are more likely to remain engaged at work, experience improved health outcomes, and maintain long term employment. In contrast, untreated substance use can contribute to increased absenteeism, workplace injuries, and higher healthcare costs.

National Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month is an opportunity for employers to reflect on how their policies and workplace culture support health and recovery. Creating recovery friendly workplaces helps reduce stigma, improves access to treatment, and ensures that employees are met with dignity and support when they need it most.

When workplaces invest in treatment and recovery, they invest in people. And when people are supported, entire organizations and communities benefit.
