We are pleased to welcome AdCare Rhode Island as one of the newest organizations to join the Recovery Friendly Workplace initiative. AdCare has been a trusted provider of care for individuals and families affected by substance use disorder, and their approach continues to center empathy, respect, and the belief that recovery is possible.

We see the mustaches every November — the funny selfies, the fundraiser posts, the friendly competition of who can grow the best one. But behind all of that, Movember is about something deeper — what men don’t say out loud.

The silence behind “I’m fine.”

Most men were raised to keep it together. Don’t cry. Don’t complain. Don’t ask for help. So they grow up learning to smile through stress, power through pain, and stay quiet through fear. That silence can feel like strength — until it starts to hurt.

On January 28, 2026, from 12 PM to 2 PM, the Work4Wellness and Recovery Friendly Workplace initiatives are partnering to host the Recovery at Work Virtual Job Fair — a statewide event connecting Rhode Island employers with job seekers in recovery.

This virtual fair provides employers the chance to engage with talented, motivated individuals who are ready to return to the workforce and contribute to their communities.

October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month, a time to honor those in recovery, remember those we’ve lost, and strengthen our communities through prevention. It’s not just about avoiding harmful choices. It’s about building a world where people feel seen, supported, and safe enough to ask for help before the pain becomes too heavy to carry alone.

Substance use is not a private issue—it’s a workplace issue. Over 70% of individuals with substance use disorders are employed, according to the National Safety Council, yet many fear disclosing their struggles due to stigma and job security concerns. In Rhode Island, the majority of overdose deaths occur among working-age adults, especially those between 45–54 years old. This makes the workplace a critical setting for prevention and recovery support.

Each August, communities across the globe observe International Overdose Awareness Month, culminating on August 31, a day of remembrance for those lost to substance use. Here in Rhode Island, this reflection is deeply personal. In 2024, the state reported 329 overdose deaths, according to the Rhode Island Department of Health—a significant number, yet a hopeful 18.6% decrease from 2023 (RIDOH, 2025). These are not just statistics; they represent family members, coworkers, and neighbors whose absence is felt daily.
