| Position Overview |
The Graduate Studies Preparation Instructor will design and deliver a 6-week course to prepare McNair Scholars for graduate school applications. The course focuses on key components such as personal statement development, CV/resume building, interview preparation, and overall application strategy. The McNair Scholars Program supports first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students in their pursuit of doctoral study. The instructor must create an engaging, inclusive learning environment that supports the academic and professional growth of each student. | Essential Duties | • Develop a comprehensive course syllabus aligned with McNair Program goals. • Deliver engaging lessons on personal statements, CV/resume writing, interview techniques, and application strategy. • Provide individualized written and verbal feedback on students’ application materials. • Offer strategies for researching graduate programs and identifying funding opportunities. • Facilitate peer review sessions and foster a collaborative learning environment. • Track student attendance, participation, and engagement with course content. • Submit final evaluations and feedback summaries for each student. • Communicate regularly with the Project Director |
| Occasional Duties | • Participate in McNair community-building events as appropriate. • Provide informal mentoring to students interested in specific academic fields. |
| Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities | • Strong commitment to supporting first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students. • Expertise in graduate school admissions processes across disciplines. • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Strong editing, coaching, and mentorship abilities. • Ability to create an inclusive, engaging, and supportive classroom environment. |
| Required Qualifications | • Master’s degree or higher in a relevant field. • Experience with graduate school application processes (personal statement editing, CV development, interview preparation). • Experience teaching or mentoring undergraduate students. |
| Preferred Qualifications | • Master’s degree or higher in a relevant field. • Experience working with McNair Scholars or similar student populations. • Familiarity with graduate admissions in STEM, social sciences, and humanities. |
| Environmental Conditions | The employee is not exposed to known adverse environmental conditions. Instruction and mentoring occur in classrooms and other college facilities. Participation in program workshops, presentations, and related activities with students is expected. |
