Family Shelter Program Overview:

Amos House operates a family shelter for up to 57 families with over 150 children of all ages. All of the families are referred through our State’s Coordinated Entry System that identifies families with the highest acuity/vulnerability. The average length of stay is 3-4 months, although some families without income or access to housing vouchers can remain in shelter for much longer. The family shelter offers a safe, fun play space with indoor and outdoor equipment in a therapeutic environment where children can enjoy play and age-appropriate activities, including homework help if needed. The play space is open after school hours and special hours during school vacations.

Position Overview

The Support Specialist will serve as a support to the children who utilize the Playroom Space at the family shelter. Typically, there are 10-20 children present in the playroom during open hours.

This position will include at least four hours on Saturday and afternoon and evening hours Monday-Thursday working in the Playroom.

The following duties are assigned:

· Manage playroom

· Maintain cleanliness and organization of the space, ordering supplies as needed

· Create an activity’s calendar for weekly activities, including crafts and special events

· Managing playroom staff schedules and daily responsibilities of playroom staff

· Help with inventory of toys, books, games, and equipment.

· Enforce safety boundaries to ensure children are safe at all time.

· Conduct intakes for new families

· Reach out to area schools and colleges to identify volunteer tutors and homework helpers and play space support. Oversee volunteer sign- up and volunteer tasks and responsibilities.

· Assist in identifying outside activities for families including obtaining tickets to the area museums and zoo and other free events.

· Other duties as assigned.

Candidate will demonstrate at least 2-3 years’ experience working with children and families, with a love of working with children of all ages. Candidate will have a thorough knowledge of the stages of child development and age- appropriate play. Preference will be made for a candidate with an education background or experience working in childcare/after school program settings. Experience working with children who have experienced trauma, as well as families who are unhoused is a plus. A valid driver’s license, registration and insurance and a clean BCI is a must. Candidate must have appropriate professional boundaries and abide by HIPPA regulations and Amos House policies of confidentiality. Bi-lingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

Hours: Full time position, Mon-Thursday 12-8 and Saturday, 12pm-4pm during winter and fall.

Salary: $45-50K based on experience
