Position Overview The Career Development Center provides a range of services for students and alumni that may be helpful at any point of the career decision-making or job search process. The Career Development Center facilitates programs, initiatives and services that support career readiness, career exploration, internship engagement, student employment and employer relations. The office hosts several targeted job and internship career fairs, schedules on-campus interviews with prospective employers, sponsors career programs, and conducts workshops on topics such as job searches, resume writing, and interviewing. The Career Development Center also provides students with assistance with graduate studies program search and personal statements. The College’s student employment program that offers career-related on-campus opportunities is also administered by the Center.
Primary Purpose The Assistant Director of Career and Life Design will work alongside the Director of Career and Life Design to deliver a student-centered career and life design model that supports our diverse students across four years. The Assistant Director assists with the facilitation of the Center’s experiential learning opportunities, including but not limited to internship programs, career mentoring programs, partnerships with faculty and alumni, employer relations, and student employment at Rhode Island College. The Assistant Director will partner with faculty and staff to enhance and increase experiential learning opportunities for students. The incumbent works to design and implement expanded experiential career development programs like job shadowing, micro-internships and informational interviews. The Assistant Director is responsible for developing and maintaining effective relationships with local, regional, and national internship sites to increase recruitment opportunities and student participants. The Assistant Director develops and implements classroom and outreach programs designed to increase student participation in high-impact learning experiences.
Essential Duties

Experiential Education and Learning

  • Assist with the facilitation and management of the Center for Career and Life Design’s experiential learning opportunities, including but not limited to internship programs, career mentoring programs, partnerships with faculty and alumni, employer relations, and student employment at Rhode Island College.
  • Design and implement expanded experiential career design programs like job shadowing, mentoring programs, internships, micro-internships and informational interviews.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships among students, employers, administrators, and faculty that lead to the development of credit and non-credit internships and other paid/unpaid opportunities.
  • Serve as the contact for internship sites, student interns, and faculty supervisors and ensure the use of forms and compliance of procedures and policies regarding internships; collaborate with academic program internship coordinators as needed.
  • Market internships and other high-impact learning experiences to students; provide information about opportunities; distribute paperwork, facilitate and track student participation.
  • Actively seek and establish new internship contacts and strengthen current internship relationships through outreach activities such as cold calls, networking activities, and individual internship site visits.
  • Develop and update related internship forms, paperwork, and web-based information.
  • Develop a formal line of communication with the academic departments to promote internship opportunities and career guidance for the students.
  • Lead efforts to support and assist students with exploring graduate programs; develop programs, workshops and services for students preparing for application of graduate programs.
  • Coordinate and participate in career fairs and collaborate with Graduate Studies and other offices/schools as needed.
  • Collaborate with Alumni Relations, the Office of Academic Advising, Schools, academic departments and more to expand mentoring opportunities for current students.

 

Student Employment

  • With Director, design and ensure transformative student employment model designed to help students develop, reflect on and articulate career competencies.
  • Assist with overseeing the student employment program at Rhode Island College.
  • With Director, collaborate with Financial Aid, Payroll, MIS and others as needed to ensure an efficient and streamlined student employment onboarding process.
  • Serve as the primary contact for off-campus student employment sites; provide consistent evaluation of mutually beneficial partnerships.
  • Work with student employment staff to conduct student employment training and workshops with supervisors and student employees to provide information, guidance, expectations, etc.
  • Market student employment opportunities to all constituents.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • With Director, assist with the delivery of student-centered career and life design model that supports our diverse students across four years.
  • Serve on internal and external committees related to career readiness, applied learning experiences and high impact practices.
  • Review and update annually all experiential learning and student employment publications, forms and surveys.
  • Participate in key College events, including but not limited to New Student Orientation and Admissions yield events to inform students and families about career development and student employment services.
  • Actively participate in professional activities that strengthen ties between the College and organizations seeking to employ the college-educated work force.

Career Advising

  • Advise students looking for employment/internship opportunities on- and off-campus (including part-time and seasonal); introduce students to array of options, discuss/evaluate how these options connect with career choice, and assist with effective job search skills development (e.g., resume, cover letter, interviewing, networking).
  • Advise students on enhancing their job search skills and capacity to express the relevance of their strengths to potential internship sites and employers (e.g., job search materials, social media).
  • Advise current students interested in applying to graduate school.
  • Advise students on their career exploration and career pathway development.

Assessment and Reporting

  • Assess and report outcomes of efforts supporting the college’s internship program, student employment and employer relations.
  • Coordinate and facilitate assessment of experiential learning programs and initiatives to ensure continuous growth and quality of experience for all members.
  • Provide relevant outcomes and statistics as requested.

Required Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree in higher education/college student personnel or related area.

 

Experience: A minimum of three to five years of experience providing career counseling services and employer relations (which includes managing an on-line job posting system). Experience with internships, experiential learning, employer relations in career services. Strong experience successfully working with external and internal stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Rhode Island job market.
  • Bilingual in English / Spanish (fluent in speaking and writing).
  • Experience working with Handshake or similar career and employment tool
