Position Overview ART 107 combines and extends elements from ART 101: Drawing I and ART 104: Design I with more advanced exploration and research of digital still and moving images for art making. The focus is on the visual expression of creative concepts and design using pixel-based (Photoshop®) and vector-based (Illustrator®) software and creation of a digital portfolio using WIX®. Students are encouraged to edit and expand their digital portfolio as they complete their degree and prepare for internships, jobs, or graduate school application.
Essential Duties
  • Build on what students have learned in ART 101: Drawing I and ART 104: Design I, using the computer as a tool for creating digital artwork while continuing to consider the elements of art and principles of organization,
  • Help students Investigate the impact of contemporary digital technology on imagination, visual storytelling, and artistic expression,
  • Instruct basic Mac OS skills,
  • Instruct a basic working knowledge of pixel-based software skills including an understanding of pixel dimension, resolution, image correction/editing, file formats, layers, layer adjustments, masking, drawing tools, use of color, cropping, adjusting the canvas, exporting, etc.,
  • Instruct a basic working knowledge of vector-based software skills including an understanding of Bezier curves, use drawing tools, combining and separating shapes, closed vs. open paths, use of artboards, use of layers, use of color and blending modes, live effects, exporting artwork, etc.
  • Instruct time-based artwork using the Photoshop® timeline, After Effects® or other software application,
  • Instruct how to use inkjet printers and make inkjet prints,
  • Instruct how to upload and download files on RIC’s Office 365 OneDrive or other cloud storage and other file management techniques,
  • Instruct how to create a digital portfolio using WIX®.
Occasional Duties  
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Must have expertise in pixel-based design, vector-based design, and time-based art. Must be able to effectively teach contemporary technical and theoretical concepts in digital design.
  • Must be fully acquainted with Mac OS and teaching in a computer lab. Skills, knowledge and abilities should include use of software, computers, digital projector, scanner, external storage devices, and various digital output methods.
Required Qualifications

Education:

  • M.F.A. or equivalent.
  • Must have a strong commitment to teaching and professional experience.
  • Must be educated in contemporary approaches to art and design and engaged in theoretical and critical issues in visual art and digital media design.
  • Must understand the role of digital foundations in the RIC Art curricula.
Preferred Qualifications
  • College teaching experience
  • Knowledge in interdisciplinary topics.
Environmental Conditions Teaching/instruction is performed primarily in a Macintosh computer lab with 15 student workstations and one faculty workstation.
